Traveling to another country doesn't only mean visiting its famous destinations. It also means making yourself available to try out local food or cuisine regardless its tastes, look or smell (talk about exotic food!). For me, tasting local dishes is the most exciting adventure a budget traveler like me could jump into ;)
During my stay in Kuala Lumpur this year, I came accross some interesting meals and munchies that pretty much satisfied my gastromic urge. These are absolutely simple and easy to find food with reasonable price tags.
KFC
I know. I know. KFC's practically everywhere. But can you just imagine a KFC chicken without gravy on the side? For a self-confessed gravy junkie like me, this is a nightmare.

But the good news is they serve chicken rice that really tastes delicious. You will definitely throw away your gravy love with this one.

Chicken Rice
Okay...chicken rice?....again? Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country and certainly there are dietary restrictions. Chicken meat, as I understand, is the most convenient, accessible and cheapest meat in the market.
Speaking of chicken rice, we found this exciting food hub in Surria Mall-food court that serves chicken topping with rice. It's 100 percent flavorful and appetizing. You can really taste and smell authentic chicken flavor when this simple meal is served.
All chicken meal comes with spicy sawsawan (condiment) and a drink. Single serving is very generous (which is the best!).

Triangle Kimbap
Found this at the 6th Level of the Pavilion mall where the famous Daiso Japan floor is at. The food shop is called AIKO.
Triangle Kimbap is a triangle-formed rice roll in a seaweed. It's basically known as Korean sushi. It's a ready to eat rice meal without using any utensils or sticks.
My sister taught me how to open it. And I must admit, I stinks. (Ha-ha). I didn't get a pretty wrap.
Spread the plastic. Wrap the rice using nori and voila! |

Nasi Lemak
A local rice dish that is cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. It is spicy (really spicy!) and flavorful as well. Nasi Lemak is usually served with variety of side dishes like anchovies, egg, spicy sambal and sliced cucumber.

I bought my nasi lemak in Surria Mall for take out, and I wasn't able to finish one serving. It's unspeakably spicy but it's really delicious! (It's even more delicious with an ice cold Coke drink).
Cost: Starts RM1.60-2
Curry Noodles
Malaysian dishes are essentially inspired by Chinese ad Indian. The spiciness of its dishes are usually attributed to Indian influence. Take for example this curry noodles we tried in LCCT Terminal while waiting for our departure to Manila.
The richness of the curry was overwhelming for us. The staff was kind enough to give us free sabaw (broth) to add in our bowl. It's really tasty and mouthwatering.

Jalan Alor's Food Choices
For the most exciting gastronomic experience, Jalan Alor is real deal. The place is a street wide food mob which caters to all levels of food type - cheap or expensive, seafood or meat, etc. etc.
Beer in Malaysia is pretty expensive compared to Philippines. This Carlsberg 500ml beer costs about RM35 per bottle (That's almost one case of SMB light!).
My friend told us to try out Satay but my stomach was really sick that I had to skip tasting some of our orders. Again, there's always a next time ;)
